Default 3.27 morning - The Duel - OPEN/EVERYONE

Ziamara wore white again, as it only seemed fitting when standing in the midst of a house in mourning and she had a couple white dresses with her anyway. And... this was quite possibly an execution. Clad in her familiar, glimmering white samite, she took a seat beside her father and brother at the dais. She glanced over at Kyle Seyfert once, her expression worried for a moment before a courtly impassivity reigned.

On the other side of the royal party, still at the dais but with the Crownsguard betwixt them and House Seyfert, sat Lady Tyana and her sister Zanara with some of the Shores-borne noblemen with them.

Before the King and their host, the two combatants bowed and made a show of chivalric oaths, then stalked to opposite sides of a roughly marked square. The combat began when a priest of Martel blew his horn.

It wasn't a quick fight: Darres was one of the most skilled knights of the 'Shores but Kyle had chosen a vassal who'd spent years in the war and free companies before that: Ser Deziel Coleville. Three bouts passed, with Darres putting a good defense--taking blows as often as he gave them but Deziel's sword was quicker. A cut to Darres leg in the second should have been cause to surrender but the Solvitreo continued, and finally Deziel's blade slid between the plates at Darres' shoulder. Blood ran red down Deziel's sword and splashed the stones. A few more blows exchanged, then Darres' leg gave out and he fell to his knees. A tense silence followed before he dropped both sword and shield: Defeated.

Ziamara's head bowed and she reached for her brother's arm. "Let that be enough," she whispered. "Please."

Bryce watched with a passive expression, but the thoughts in his head were anything but. Justice was always fair but never kind, it seemed. He glanced over to where the Solvitreo's sat, hoping in some measure that the child now saw the foolishness of her actions... And the true cost.

Jason looked down at Ziamara's hand and lifted his own to cover it, gloved fingers tightening. "Don't look," he whispered. Because he couldn't make it stop. It was not up to him. But the way she pleaded and the look on her face... Damn it, he wished he could.

It was her fault that this was happening. Her heart felt as if it was being squeezed within her chest as she tried to breathe. She wanted to hide her face in the crook of her twin's neck, but she needed to see the damage that she had caused. Her demands, her emotions, and now it would end in Darres' demise.

She hated them. She hated them all especially herself. Her hand squeezed Zanara's tightly, but she would not dishonor her champion by looking away. She wanted to scream out mercy, but knew it would be thrown in her face.

Fat hot tears rolled down her cheeks and suddenly she wished it was her down there inching forward as if she would jump from the dias to take the last blow all the while Zanara squeezed her hand in an almost death-like grip. "This is my fault. I promised myself and I forgot it all," she sobbed words only her twin could hear.

No look of joy painted his face at this scene. As it should not, one did not need to deligh in such things...though his champion seemed to be faring well. And he felt not one ounce of sympathy for the Solvitreo. At the very thought of what they did to his father, and what possibly could have happened to his people if the fire spread...he clenched his jaw. He hoped Darres was feeling pain. Copious amounts of pain.

Ziamara held her brother's hand tight and didn't hide the pain in her own gaze when she met his, but she leaned a bit more forward and whispered just enough to be heard by their father beyond him, her voice thick with tears: "Please, father." It was a madman's life- a man who'd let others starve and die without thought or care. How was that worth the life of someone worthy?

Ziamara's hand trembled in her brother's as she prayed her father would stop this before it turned into a Merideen arena.

Zanara squeezed Tyana's hand and gave a barely-visible head shake, denying Tyana's words. She didn't trust herself to speak, so she simply kept her hand on Ty's.

Lenore stood off to the side her arms crossed over her chest. To be fair, she'd tried to tell Rothgar when Parissa and her had barged in that the Solvitreos would take matters into their own hands. It was a way of life for them. Just because Zanara was freed didn't mean things were simply... over. Darting a glance at Tyana then Zanara, Jason and Ziamara, before her gaze settled on Kyle for a moment studying him.

She'd expected to see her mother here but had yet to spot her. The fight seemed to drag on and on, and every blow to Darres made Lenore inwardly flinch. His leg gave way, and her eyes dropped. She didn't want to watch anymore.

Bryce's jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing and he turned to look at his sister who gave him a slight nod. He understood... And steeling himself, he leaned closer to his brother and whispered in a practiced whisper meant only for his king. "End this, Roth... Solvitreo will understand punishment, but Darres' life may not be so easy to sell." And he might die anyway from such an injury.

Malleus stood near the King, though not terribly close and was silent; clad in an ash gray cloak. His eyes had flickered between the two combatants and he had predicted a rather arduous fight. The two men seemed poised and seasoned. Malleus's face betrayed nothing. To him, this was only a part of life, cruel though it might be. He studied the faces around him as the bout was close to its beginning. He sensed thick tension and even anguish in some of the faces. Some of the Crownsguard seemed amused or disinterested. When the combat had peaked and Darres fell to his knee, Malleus's expression had not changed; yet the expressions of others had. His eyes resumed flickering to faces. 'It was a terrible thing but a necessary one' he thought as his eyes returned to the combatants, his head slowly shaking. Malleus hated much of the pomp at court but he did not detest justice, nor chivalry.

To say that Melantha was unhappy was an understatement. She was livid with her niece for what she had done, so much that she could barely see straight for the anger when she was informed. Finding out Darres was to fight in the duel came as no surprise at all; she would have been shocked if Kyle had not asked for such a thing. Truly, Darres deserved it for not standing up to a slip of a girl with zero sense. Gods above, had Adhemar not taught his daughters anything about subtlety? It wasn't the burning of the tower that bothered her, for the thing needed to come down. That was a necessity. But so blatantly throwing everything in her elders faces by taking a crew of men and setting it afire with prisoners inside? If Tyana had been her daughter, she'd be black and blue and unable to sit there and watch.

But Tyana was not hers, and Melantha was trapped between her loyalty to the Solvitreos, and the politics of court. Frankly, she was also appalled at the license Darres had given her niece, without at least getting some of the King's men on board and parceling out the blame.

She studiously avoided looking at Tyana as she watched the duel, although she was close enough to the king and the other Vellfyres to see that no one seemed to be urging death on Darres. She could not hear the advise given to the king, but she hoped Darres would be spared. If for no other reason than to chastise him later...

Kaelyn hated violence. The entire situation here in Delving had been entirely unnecessary. The kidnapping and imprisonment of Zanara Solvitreo in that horrid was ludicrous, and Lord Seyfert did deserve a harsher punishment in her opinion, but he did not deserve to be burnt alive trapped within those stone walls, unable to escape the heat. To be honest, she was never a fan of the Solvitreo's. They were outspoken and entirely too hot spirited for her liking. But this... what Tyana had done was entirely unspeakable. It was just plain mad.

The young lady sat behind Melantha, eyes averted downward to avoid watching the duel. She couldn't manage to actually watch. She hated it. Kaelyn understood why men had to go to war, why they needed to protect their homelands from invasion and conquer. But this had never made sense to her. Growing up in the mountains, she was used to fighting between the families, but it never went too far. And even as a child she hadn't really understood why everyone felt it was necessary to fight against each other. What Tyana had done had gone too far. She had gone against the king, and that was far too far.

Every time she heard the sound of metal against something other than metal, the young lady winced. It was the sound of metal against flesh that she hated. The knowledge that red was splatted across the ground. That was what she hated. The bloodshed.

Rothgar's eyes were cold and his jaw set in a hard line. The lines of his face only seemed to grow harsher with every drop of blood spilled until he was a picture of barely-constrained fury. Darres stumbled, fell, recovered... knelt.

He heard his daughter's whisper to Jason, then a plea meant for his ears... he didn't react. Nor did he so much as twitch when Bryce whispered as well. Darres had spent the year of his service making it no true secret he had little desire to sit at court, despite the honor it bestowed. Solvitreo arrogance. Rothgar had smiled at it, ignored it... and now Darres had acted according to every Merideen tradition.

He watched Deziel's sword rise, and the knight turn his head in question- permission or mercy...?

Rothgar let the moment stretch, let the point be made. And then he raised his hand to halt Deziel's blade from a deadly descent. "He has yielded." Rothgar's voice was a deep, booming roar-- the voice of a battle commander. "Blood is spilled. Let it be known: Darres of House Solvitreo did slay Ryan Seyfert. He has bled for it, and had the dead been a man worthy of his people's loyalty, he might have died for it. But Ryan Seyfert was oathbreaker, foresworn and absent all honor or compassion. He did not shield his people on the border, nor fill their bellies or soothe their wounds. He did not honor his liege, nor render service bound by solemn oaths. It is not death to take such a life as that. And so this matter is done." Rothgar stood up, and extended a hand toward the combatants.

"Darres Solvitreo, I commend you to your magisters. Ser Deziel, you have upheld the honor of your liege and lands with chivalry and humility. House Seyfert owes you a boon. Lord Seyfert... your father's shade is appeased, for the guilty have been shown as such. But I will not forgive his crimes. The end he met was not of my choosing and thus it was the wrong one but I will not say he deserved life. Let this be the guide of your rule henceforth: to be a better man, a truer servant, a braver lord and a more honorable patriarch than ever he was. Serve better gods, Lord Seyfert."

With that, the king turned and swept down from the dais, walking the blood and the men crowding around Darres without a backward glance.
