Default 1.04.331 (noon) - After-Action Briefing - Rothgar, Jarem, Edric, Jason, Kadreth, Kain, Gareth, Gaiseric, Kain (Ask to Enter)

The dawn had come, clear and cold and brought with it a blanket of snow that fell in fat, lazy flakes and slowly chocked out the fires and mixed with the ashes and smoke to a gray, funereal pall.

Rothgar, true to his decision the night before, called for a council- though not the usual council this time, as half his councilors were sick. Instead he sent for his heir, his nephews, goodson, constable, and the sons of Harrowmont and Solvitreo. Jayr Solvitreo had sent word he could not come- but his magister attended in his stead, as his lord had suffered a wound to the leg that would keep him in his bed for a few days.

Rothgar had not come to meet the lords until his page returned to say that they were all assembled in the Gryphon Court- now he strode into the great room to take his place at the table that had been set up in the middle of the area where the courtiers usually were dancing or idly talking as they waited for audiences elsewhere in the palace.

The king sat down at one end of the table and looked around. "How much of our city remains alive this day, my lords? And what remains to punish the villains of this treason?"

He was tired... His shoulders and neck ached from exhaustion. If asked, he was telling people he had in fact gone to sleep... but he hadn't. He had managed to close his eyes for about fifteen minutes, but that could hardly be called rest. Nevertheless... to work. He sat silently until he heard his father enter, and as expected, he stood and bowed, waiting for him to sit before taking his seat once again.

"Firewell is a loss," Jason answered. "The Western portions of the city were also devastated... but we likely won't have more accurate numbers until later... Either way... By my estimation... there's still plenty left to punish. We also managed to capture quite a few before they fled the Temple District... They are currently in the dungeons now awaiting your judgment, your grace."

Jarem settled back down into his seat after the king seated himself, adopting a comfortable position of folding one leg beneath the other and leaning loosely forwards against the table. He had made a point to arrive on time or at least earlier than he might have been used to. Had he been in Trimeris, however, it would have been viewed more fashionable to be late by some of the nobility. To them, lateness was a game, the more late someone was the more collected and in control they thought they appeared. Some Edolene had even asked Jarem if the tales of Trimerid councils happening several weeks or even months after their intended date leading to the use of false dates and times to counter it were true.

As he plucked stray white cat hairs that had found themselves on his dark silk robes, he glanced slowly up at the king then his eyes trailed across the room. The king looked ancient in comparison to the many of the men present but then again, he looked like a newborn babe next to King Boabdil and Queen Lindaraxa who both might as well be farting dust on their thrones. He looked back down at his cat hair ridden sleeves, perhaps appearing disinterested as he was prone to seem out of habit but no less genuinely curious or attention, especially in the case of piqued interest at the mention of Firewall, which was a loss before all this even started in his opinion, and of the prisoners, who guaranteed some entertainment.

Gareth was tired, but that just scratched the surface. Tired, bruised, aching, hungover, lungs still burning from the day before. He was sure there were a few other problems mixed in around there, but those were the pressing ones.

He had a bruise extending for half of his face, but luckily it wasn't overly swollen. A cold washcloth pressed over it for the better part of an hour had taken the worst of the swelling out before he did his best to look not entirely like shit in front of the king and lords.

Of course, now that he was there, he realized that while he wasn't the only person likely to look like shit, he also was going to have to deal with the fact that he didn't look entirely the best, either. Oh well. There wasn't anything to be done.

"Your Grace," he said, bowing. "Highness. Serenity. Lords."

Gaiseric had been able to sleep after they had returned from Firewell. He had his wounds addressed, most of them minor, a few scrapes bruises and small burns here and there. The worst of it was his lungs which still burned from taking in so much smoke. Once he was cleaned up he had collapsed into his bed exhaustion taking him.

He was roused by a servant a few hours later; he was informed that he had been summoned to be apart of King Rothgar's council. So there he was tired, sore, uncomfortable, and feeling out of place sitting at this table. He adjusted his tunic. The nice red one his sister had gotten made for him. It was a lovely to look at, but he was much more comfortable in his armor.

He sat quietly. He was rhythmically tapping his boot against the floor nervously as he awaited the King's entrance. Guy rose and bowed as everyone else had when Rothgar finally appeared, but he remained silent when Rothgar posed his questions. He allowed for those with more experience with such proceedings, take the lead. He was content to watch and listen for now.

Edric was wide awake and he had the best sleep of his life. When he learned he had been summoned to the king’s council, he chose his very best attire and made sure he looked absolutely presentable. He was coming in place of Georg Seyfert and he thanked the gods for making that man sick. Edric sat in his chair with his head held high and back straight with a giant smile on his face, hands on his lap, proud to be on the council. And he listened intently as the king’s heir answered his father.

Kain was dead on his feet, and as he swayed as he rose to bow to the king. Everything hurt- his ribs, his arm, his legs... even his lungs. He felt like he'd fallen off his horse ten times instead of just once, and the bitter taste of willow-bark infusion was still at the back of his mouth from the last round the magister had pressed him into taking before he left.

He dropped into his chair and tried to pay attention to Jason's report. "Some of them made it to the dungeon? I'm impressed you held the men back so well, cousin."

Rothgar glanced at Kain but his eyes continued from his nephew to the others around the table. "Indeed; I half expected to have no prisoners at all left alive. Firstly, Lord Commander, I would have you put a few to the question of who if anyone incited them to this madness. Use whatever methods you think most likely to work."

The king leaned on his elbow, adopting an almost-careless pose in his chair. "And now, I would hear from you all: what do you advise be done with these men? And with this ungrateful and treasonous city?"

Kadreth was late to the meeting, but the reason for it was obvious as he made his way through the Gryphon Court. His steps were slow, hindered by a right leg that was splinted and wrapped tightly which dragged as he walked. The magister had told him it wasn't broken, but the fall from his horse hadn't left him unscathed. His right wrist was similarly swollen and sore, but much less useless.

Instead of interrupting, Kadreth made an awkward bow and slowly took a chair.

Edric looked to the late constable with a scowl, even glaring at him, and he straightened his back, puffing out his chest and raising his chin with pride. He had been on time. He then returned his attention to the king, deciding to speak up like an eager teacher’s pet.

“Your grace, princes, and lords, I would suggest impaling the prisoners with a stake and letting their bodies rest before the city,” he said, trying to make his voice echo so that all would hear him. It would be a gruesome sight for the common-folk to see, their loved ones with a stake up the rear and out the mouth. “That way, it would serve as an example to the people… Let their families see them in such a way and for the birds and dogs to feast upon the flesh of their kin…” His voice then dropped and he became nervous, then playing with his fingers.

Gareth glanced toward the Lord Constable dragging his leg, but his attention was diverted to Edric Sollis. Gareth raised a hand to rub his fingers against the side of his head. "Yes, let the families see their loved ones impaled on pikes. And their neighbors, friends, lovers, customers... because there is no way that all those people won't congregate together angrier than ever about the display. That sort of fear works well enough when most of the people you rule are well-behaved. When they've just shown themselves to be violent, riotous shits is the time to not give them new martyrs."

"Then make your suggestion, Gareth," Kain said with a half-smile. "Should we hug them and make them promises of better days and fatter bellies?" He turned his eyes twoard his uncle. "Let them watch the men who rose up suffer, your grace. They raised a hand to their overlords; by the law they should lose the hand... some of them both, one could argue. Make a show of butchering the traitor Vayths in the dungeon, followed with those from the city. And then level a blood-price on the entirety of New Volorro and Firewell. They pay or they forfeit their place as freemen- obviously they'd be better off working a field somewhere... though as Meadows says, they're all violent, riotous shits. You could call in the levies and put them all to the sword- just have done with it."

"It's not a matter of not doing anything. It's a matter of doing things in the right order," said Gareth. "They know the hammer's coming down. Chances are, they're already holed up knowing the soldiers are going to be marching down their streets. Word's going to spread that some of them were taken. They know those men are going to die. Pity that there aren't arenas here in Kingsreach; nothing takes the shine off would-be martyrs as seeing them openly fail to save their own lives."

Gareth glanced from Kain to the king. "It's not just you the people offended, Your Grace - though you're the only one they really ought to be fearing at the moment. Still, the smallfolk think in certain ways, and one of those ways leads directly to the gods. What they did, the outrages they committed... The priesthood in the kingdom is going to want retribution, too. If they're pacified sufficiently and given a target you set for them, you'll find that when the gates of Volorro open and word starts trickling out of the city into the rest of the kingdom, the priests will be praising your name for defending the honor of the gods."

He paused, tapping a thumb against the table as he continued. "There are orders of the priesthood that have been depleted by the years of war and shortages... Go through New Volorro and Firewell and let the temples exact their vengeance by taking their children. Boys, girls, ages... I don't know, five through ten to serve as acolytes. Not here in Kingsreach. Separate siblings. And that's just the beginning."

Jason's eyes flashed to Kadreth as he entered and they followed him to his chair as he listened to Kain and Gareth debate about what was to be done with the men. "Exactly how is that exacting revenge? They take children into their orders... Clothe and feed them... Care for them and educate them... Some learn how to use weapons depending on the orders who take them... This sounds exactly like that 'hugging them and giving them fat bellies.' If we mean to appease everybody... we simply allow the High Priests or Priestesses sit in judgment with us..." He paused. "But... I am curious as to what comes after the beginning."

"Children that will likely never see nor speak to their families again," said Gareth. "Oddly, even smallfolk are sentimental about their sons and daughters, and in the city the families are smaller... One or two pulled from families in the countryside is hardly an impact, but here it's considerably more. It's one thing to give up a child willingly, it's another to have them taken somewhere."

He shrugged. "And that's when the blood price from His Grace is exacted. Take one or two more... this time older children, but take them for the benefit of the crown. There are roads needing built, bridges needing repaired, docks expanded, storehouses raised; planting season is coming soon, too. Maybe a bond of five years. Levy the blood price, then let the temples in to sit in judgment alongside you. Finish it off with the executions. That's not a population likely to fight you any more."

"If the sentiment is there, my lord, it is not only the parents that will feel it. We let the temples take these children and they pledge to Martel, or Edelina, or Thorin... It is a risk. One that if we are to take... we must also regulate." He leaned to one side and contemplated. "Your plan has merit, though. Put the people to work... The city is in disrepair... They can fix it."

Though he nodded at both Gareth's plan and Jason's speech, he held up a hand to forestall any further discussion. "My nephews and son speak readily enough. What of the others here? Constable, Kingsport, and Harrowmont: I would hear your thoughts as well."

In the beginning, everything was easy to follow... turn the commoners into a giant kebab… easy… but as the conversation progressed, there were more and more words, some unknown to him, and Jarem felt a little behind and left out in understanding what was being proposed, even though he still managed to grasp enough to get the general idea. He had been plucking and flicking the cat hairs from his clothing as he listened but when the king asked the other men to speak, he straightened up, just a little, not enough to cease his comfortable slouching against the table but enough to look like he wasn’t slowly passing away into the netherworld. "Take and do with their children as you will, use them for labour, send them to war…" that was as far as Jarem agreed with the bastard lord, "but I do not want to see them clothed, fed… educated. There is nothing more dangerous than in a common man. They will grow to resent you and then when you die, they will be Jason’s problem. Is putting the children of those who revolt against you in temples what you want the Elonians to hear, your majesty? They think like dogs, they will see that as weakness."

"As for the prisoners, it doesn’t matter what the people will or will not do now. They must be punished, think of what they have done to the princess and the other ladies and to this city. They made the choice to rise against you, let them draw lots and choose their own fates, one death more gruesome than the last," Jarem suggested casually. He mostly enjoyed the idea of having the men who had united together start feeling less unified when they knew that they had to be luckier than his companions when it came to the length of his straw.

Kadreth, late to the table, listened intently once he was there. His eyes moved from man to man, landing lastly on Prince Jarem, and he frowned slightly though made no other outward show of emotion. "With all due respect, riotous as many in this city became, they are not Elonian. Punishing one's own people is not the same as fighting an invading force, by far. Forget the separation and you invite civil war to your doorstep. The common men outnumber us, as they do everywhere, and they have a way of learning how to put cities to siege. I have seen that with my own two eyes."

His gaze turned distinctly suspicious and he looked to Rothgar instead. "I have as much cause as several at this table to want terrible revenge, but I would not see this madness spread beyond this city, now or years from now. Making the temples your advocates rather than your enemies would help, though they may simply want money instead of future priests and priestesses to mold to the standards of their orders. Give them a full say at how justice should be carried out, as the crown prince suggested."

He nodded at Jarem, gave Kadreth a lingering look without any real expression- but then, Rothgar had not shown much expression for the duration of the meeting. He turned to Gaiseric. "And you, my lord? What path would your choose?"

"It is not about forgetting the separation," Jason said, eyes on Kadreth. "It's about reminding them the consequence of inciting a riot and spilling noble blood. You don't just slap somebody on the wrist for that... Though I agree... We must find a balance between shaking our heads at them and staking them..." he said, his gaze slowly turning back to his cousin.

And then his father spoke... and then there was silence. A long, long silence... In which Jason just stared at Gaiseric and waited for the man to speak... Perhaps he hadn't heard his father? Perhaps... he was deliberating the path he'd take. But after a moment of silence just stretched into more silence, Jason cleared his throat. "I think we all at least agree the temples should be involved in determining punishment. Both for judgments and reparations."

The silence that ensued made Rothgar's eyes narrow and he turned his eyes from Gaiseric to Jason. "What temples? What survivors? Shall I wait the days for the high priests to be named anew and hold their councils to see justice done, my lords?" he asked the room at large again. "Or shall we act now, for swift justice and ensure the temples are paid in blood and coin as we go?"

"Act now, your majesty," Jarem answered decidedly when the king addressed everyone for their thoughts. There were so many heads in the council room at some degree of disagreement as things stood, with more as the high priests joined them sounded like it would be even more slow and confusing.

"The problem of involving the temples in general is that half the godsworn in this city are dead and gathering others from the countryside will take a month or more- depending on your grace's edict of quarantine." Kain's eyes were cold, his voice dispassionate.

"Prince Jarem and your lord Constable both make good points: we must make sure no Elonians are born of this, and yet must be sure to see this rebellion shattered and buried in the dust. I say gather to you whatever high- or the highest- priests and priestesses who remain, uncle, and ask them what punishments the gods demand of those who rose against their ordained rule. Then take the men we captured and decimate them- one in ten will lose his life in whatever way the gods decreed. The others lose a left or right hand, by lots, and some lucky straws might just have their faces branded. Then let whatever remains of their lives be spent building new temples and fixing what they tried to destroy."

"We cannot delay justice... Or it will give others cause to act unjustly. There are enough surviving high priests and priestesses to more than serve... Asking involves them without such a delay... And for the rest of it, I agree with Lord Kain... Different methods of punishment of varying degrees... Let the gods decide mercy... I have a feeling the rest of us are in short supply. Even so... doing it this way shows them a kindness we'd never show prisoners of an invading force... Thus... all are appeased..." he said, looking back at Kadreth.

Gareth looked between those speaking, not quite the picture of someone convinced by the arguments, but also apparently not willing to make it a hill to die on, either. "I don't see a reason to wait until the temples have sorted out replacements, especially since they will no doubt be calling in those from outside the city in high regard to occupy positions left behind. Only those who experienced the madness ought to sit in judgment. There should be a handful of those in high order at least who survived. Let them confer with you, You Grace, and then enact the punishments you see fit. I am sure none you speak to would call for total clemency."
