Default Whoooo Arrreeeee Youuuuuu? | 5.14, midday, Dami, Liz, etc.

As the days rolled by, Valencia had been experiencing some changes that confused her if not frustrated her to the point where Elizabeth had to explain a few things for her to get through it. She NEVER cried and now she just cried at a drop of a hat, or when damnable puppies were found playing. PUPPIES of all things. Her breasts were sore and if she ever attempted to stretch she felt her legs seize up as if they were crushed under a wagon wheel. Of course, the thought was that it was even worse than being tread under wheel or horse, but such things felt almost unnatural. It was tiresome, everything was tiresome even though she was often always fine with routine. It was a grand foundation for all of the shit that would come pouring in that needed to get cleaned up while the King was away.

Tiresome, tedious and...now they had new people that arrived at the palace. A recognized bastard of her uncle's and Kalden's new bride. That raised a brow, but she needed to meet the creature that would be that brooding Vellfyre's blushing bride. Why bar the way, why get her spies in to see what the girl was about if she could just simply summon the girl and figure these things out on her own? Would Zee be impressed? Would Jas be surprised?

"Go fetch my cousin's new bride I think a day and a half of arriving is sufficient," she said as she waved her hand in dismissal. Despite being stuck in the tower, she actually seemed to like it well enough and when it was once punishment Liz managed to make it almost charming and home, her own place to call home. She was in her solar sitting on a sturdy stool that offered a bit of back support built as requested as she painted. Landscapes, portraits, and such were all things that managed to get stuck in her mind and she drew and painted what she needed to get out of her thoughts. It helped when she had no desire to draw or paint fruit in a basket and today, she ended up drawing the six puppies that were following along the bitch of one of the hunters. A fine hunting dog as would all of the puppies that were born.

"She likely is looking forward to meeting a princess," Elizabeth observed, lifting her head from her sewing long enough to watch Valencia's other attendant rush off in search of Damiata. "I'm expecting that she never planned to see Tal Volorro, much less become a cousin." Today, owing to the heat that had started to permeate, Liz had done both her and Valencia's hair up in elaborate braids atop their heads, so that the cool air could reach their necks. Absently, she tugged at a bit of loose hair before she looked down at the fine baby dress she was embroidering. It seemed as though the last month alone had been her feverishly preparing for the new arrival, and keeping Valencia as comfortable as possible. She certainly did not mind that, as she preferred Valencia's company, but she hated seeing the princess in such pain, going through the last stages of pregnancy. It did not help that the height of summer was upon them, as it was the worst time of year to suffer such.

"I'm curious about Keegan's new daughter, as well," she observed, a bit more craftily. "None one back from the progress has explained how that came about, well enough for my taste anyway."

Damiata stopped outside the room the princess occupied. She tugged on her sleeves to straighten them, checked her dress again. A day and a half in Tor Vellesca's grandeur had left her reeling rather than comforted. Now a princess... and Damiata wasn't Valisa, she didn't have blood in common with the Vellfyres...

She swallowed, screwing up her courage before the servant opened the door to announce her. She entered with slow, small steps to avoid tripping on her hem, terribly conscious of the linen brocade dress she wore and how little it resembled Valencia's or those on the other women. Mountain styles, not entirely suited to the lowland heat, and hastily altered to pass muster with the court... but the neckline remained a trace higher, the sleeves narrower, the skirts not so full. At least her hair was arranged in a similar type of braid...?

She dipped into a low curtsy, waiting to be spoken to before addressing anyone.

Valencia was too busy nitpicking a detail as Elizabeth responded. "Perhaps, but I would not imagine that I am the likely choice," it was said matter-of-factly, but off-handly and even excluded the sting that it might have once had when compared to her half-sister.

"Yes, that I would imagine is the truth of it. I heard that these Mondragons are dreadful creatures, but I am and have never really been one for gossip," she added as she began to mix her paints once more.

"All in due time," she murmured. "I do not wish to be bombarded by these people, but by all means, if you see her in passing, perhaps you can gain an impression of her so I am prepared for it. She is probably overjoyed with such a change in her life and might I am not ready to have to deal with her especially if she is ill-mannered and boorish," she added with a sniff.

Just as she finished her sentence, the door opened and a dark-haired girl was escorted further into the chambers. Valencia's head rose and she openly assessed the girl. By the gods, what was she wearing? The princess thought as she stared at Damiata. "What is your name girl?" She asked with a snip not realizing that it might have sounded rude if not impatient as she went back to what she was doing as soon as she had her fill of what the girl looked like knowing that she could never burn such an image out of her mind.

"Take it away to dry and bring a fresh canvas," she commanded just then as she looked back at Dami, but did not offer her the opportunity to sit.

"Damiata, your highness." She rose, stiff and awkward, and stood as still as she could. Her eyes followed the canvas as the servants came and swept it away to replace it with another. Fortunes must be spent for that... and the pigments? But what did a king's daughter care? Why should she? Dami's mind reeled at the concept of the woman before her. Valencia was indeed as swollen with child as she'd been told, and as beautiful. But somehow Dami had pictured the Vellfyre women to be... different. More like Valisa...

"Lady Damiata," Elizabeth greeted her, as kind and smiling as Valencia was not. She set aside the sewing so she could properly look over the young woman, although she raised an amused eyebrow at Valencia's imperious commands. "Well met, and we are glad to see Lord Kalden's wife ensconced with the rest of us here." Her words seemed sincere, for all that Valencia's would likely gainsay them. "I'm Elizabeth Ambrosius."

The servants came back with a fresh canvas and almost immediately Valencia began to draw something out. She noticed how stiff and awkward the girl was, but ignored it as she introduced herself as Damiata. While Elizabeth was introducing herself, Valencia fell silent for a moment listening to and watching the exchange with nonchalance all the while there was a layer of concentration too.

"And how was your trip here, Damiata?" She asked now that Dami knew all of the people who mattered currently already assuming that woman knew who she was. It was a bit of a test to see how intelligent the girl might be.

"O-only future wife, Lady Elizabeth. But well pleased to meet you." She smiled, relieved at least to find one friendly face. She swallowed hard to try to answer the princess properly, but despite her cousin's lessons, she didn't yet have the knack built for easy conversation in High Edolene--at least not the lowlanders' accents.

"'Twas meet and merry, princess. The roads not but half muck and all the people kind. We had none of us the troubles so besetting others this season..." She paused. "The city tis yet more splendid than all the singers e'er said. That alone hath been more amazing than the rest of the journey together."

Listening to Damiata’s recounting made Valeria blink and stare at her whatever she was drawing forgotten for the moment as she looked almost pained. “Urgh…what did she say Liz?” Her tone did not hold any anger or disgust, but could have been misinterpreted as such. It just held a few words that she recognized all the while it rattled in a glass jar like marbles jarring the ears. She did not realize she would need a translator. Her speech, her clothes, there was a lot that needed to be done to get the girl ready for this court. What if Keegan's bastard, err child was just as bad?

"Your Highness," Elizabeth began, and her tone sounded respectful and kind, but Valencia could hear the undertone from long practice. It was the be nice version. "You are from the mountains, Lady Damiata, from what I understand. I do not think our princess has had much experience with the...forms of speech." To Valencia, she said, "Damiata was just saying how the road was in good form, and the people kind. And of course the city." She smiled at Damiata, kindly. "I agree with her, Your Highness, as I was not born here either. One's first glance of Tal Volorro is always a magnificent one."

Dami's face turned pink. "A-apologies, your highness. Valisa's taught me what her mother hath made known to her of the lowland speak yet tis... tis a new-learned skill and one escapeth my tongue an' not known with ease. None e'er thought 'pon my ending in the court. 'Twas Lord Kalden chose me, by the king's right leave, an' my cousins all were better learned than I." She shrugged, helpless to better explain it. "Valisa speaks much be'er in the courtly ways."

Valencia looked at Elizabeth. Her eyes widened and her head gave a slight tilt denoting the what? I was being nice expression. Then shook her head to continue with her sketch.

“Having lived here most of my life, it is the only place I want to be,” she muttered a bit grumpily with a bit of distraction from what she was doing. She did however note the blush that graced Dami’s face at her words and the name of her new cousin being spoken. “Yes, yes, I did not mean to sound…harsh. I have always spoken my mind but it is not out of malice, Dami. You will need to grow a thicker skin for many that you would meet would have knives or acid for tongues. Unless you are the type to allow others to battle for you?” It was not swords that she spoke of but wit in an attempt to defend against those more seasoned jaded courtiers.

“Fie upon my cousin. He has done you no favors and will just grow even sourer…if that is possible especially with the courts hoping you to be their new chew toy. He has at least found some quality in you to have picked you and not just a pretty face and an empty head,” she said as if going through a mental list knowing that those types of people hardly lasted here worse if they attempted some sort of half-minded intrigue. “It is perhaps a good thing that this Valisa speaks better, but I am not currently concerned about her. I would imagine you and your kin have been sent here to be kept safe. We have had word sent back that your home could be quite treacherous with bandits, rebels and the like.” Then she cleared her throat and changed the subject.

“Have there already been arrangements set for a change of wardrobe?” She asked. “You cannot continue to look like a mountain girl.” Valencia hope she was not some martyr ready to die for the sake of her family’s pride while running around in refurbished rags.

"I... yea, your highness. The word of the king's own hardships..." She shuddered. "But w-we are... having dresses remade. The... ah, the thought twas to see it done here, ere the court returned else have the wrong fashion followed."

"Yes, that is a good plan," she agreed as the girl attempted to talk slower and enunciate more. She could appreciate that as she continued to paint. "What are your skills? A usual day when you were home?" Sometimes Val carried her conversations more like an interview, checking off a list in her mind, but committed answers to memory to draw upon later into reasonable and logical conclusions.
